HOW WE DECIDE WHO GETS FUNDED

Our goal is to fund at least one business every month, and we take pitches every day. Every pitch is scored on three questions:

  • Is it realistic? (Who does the work, and by when?)
  • Is it profitable? (What you charge, what it costs, and when it pays for itself.)
  • Is it socially responsible? (Who it helps, and how you handle who it could hurt.)

ON THE PITCH BOARD RIGHT NOW

Five member pitches are live, asking a combined $2.3 million. They range from a pre-revenue health and nutrition initiative to a growing media studio, a community clean-energy nonprofit, a research fellowship and an entertainment startup.

Pitch details stay behind sign-in because members' ideas belong to them. Signed-in members can read each pitch, rate it, ask Sean about it, request a meeting, donate a grant or offer a loan. Money sent through Melanin Valley Pay lands straight in the founder's balance, ready to cash out to their bank.

Grant requests: five members have set grant goals on their profiles this month. If you've been waiting for the right time to back someone, this is it.

THIS MONTH'S PLAYBOOK: BUY A BUSINESS, KEEP THE WEALTH

How one member could use valleymelanin.com from first click to Generational Wealth.

  1. Find the deal. The MVP Market lists 65 businesses for acquisition and 6 real estate deals. Look for steady monthly revenue you can understand and improve.

  2. Pitch it for funding. Submit the acquisition on the Growing business or Real estate track, and show it's realistic, profitable and socially responsible. Members can fund it with a grant or a loan through Melanin Valley Pay.

  3. Close it, then protect it. Book your free Generational Wealth Consultation with The Wealth Teacher, Tamara Singleton. Plan how to maximize the income and keep it in the family: entity setup, business credit, taxes, trusts and wills.

  4. Keep the revenue running. Melanin Valley interns are assigned to set up and maintain the business's revenue automations, so the income keeps coming while you work on the next deal.

  5. Pay it forward. Use part of the profit to back the next founder on the pitch board. That's how wealth stays in the Valley.

This is an example of how our tools fit together, not a promise of results. Every deal and funding decision is reviewed on its own merits, and nothing here is investment, tax or legal advice.

THE VALLEY WIRE

What's moving in culture, money, markets and policy, as of October 9.

Culture

It's Black History Month across the UK, and Brixton's Black Culture Market returned to Lambeth Town Hall on October 10 and 11, with 40-plus Black-owned businesses, makers and creatives under the theme "Honouring Our Communities." Wherever you are, this is a good month to buy Black and say so out loud.

Global money

The US dollar is holding strong while the euro slipped to a 17-month low, under $1.12, on worries about France's budget deficit. US 10-year Treasury yields are at their highest level since 2002. In plain terms: borrowing is expensive right now, so cash flow and smart financing matter more than ever.

Stock market

As of October 2, the S&P 500 was up about 12.6% for the year and the Nasdaq about 17%, led by technology and energy. Traders are watching the Federal Reserve closely. Earnings season starts this month.

Policy watch

A revised CFPB lending rule that took effect in July narrows how lenders can be held responsible under fair-lending law for practices that hit some groups harder than others, and SBA guidance from February limits SBA-backed loans to businesses fully owned by US citizens or nationals. Supporters say both simplify lending; small business advocates say they make capital harder to reach. If you're planning to borrow, talk it through with The Wealth Teacher first.

WE WANT EVERYONE GETTING PAID

If you've opened your onboarding folder, you saw a W-9, an ADP form and an Employment Application. Don't let the wording throw you: you're not applying for a job. That paperwork is simply how payments get filed.

When Melanin Valley sends you a large or recurring payout, whether that's a grant, a commission, a contract or a paycheck, the IRS needs it on record as W-2 or 1099 income. Fill the forms in once, upload them to your folder, and you're ready to get paid.
